TPO in Simple Terms: What It Is & Why It Works
TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane that’s heat-welded into one continuous sheet. Think of it as a tough, flexible skin for flat and low-slope roofs on residential and commercial buildings across San Diego. During installation, seams are fused with hot air. There are no adhesives at the laps, so water has nowhere to sneak in. The white and light-gray options also reflect heat, boosting energy efficiency in our UV-intense climate.
- Watertight by design: hot-air welded seams that stay tight.
- Energy-smart: light colors help cut heat gain for a cooler flat roof.
- Clean look: crisp, modern finish that suits many roof systems.
- Proven material: durable membrane that stands up to sun and foot traffic.
Built for San Diego: Cool, Clean, Low-Slope Ready
San Diego roofs take a beating—long sun, salty air, and year-round UV. TPO roofing solutions handle it. This single-ply roofing material reflects heat, resists chalking, and keeps flat and low-slope surfaces looking sharp on commercial buildings, HOAs, apartments, and select residential roofing projects. Many TPO options are listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), supporting the energy efficiency of TPO roofing membranes without complicated add-ons.

They recently completed a full roof replacement on our home and we appreciate the skill and professionalism afforded to my husband and me. They arrived on time for appointments and maintained a clean work area. Communication was excellent, with updates and answers to questions. The workmanship was exceptional. High-quality materials were used, and attention to detail was given during the installation. The project finished on time, and the pricing was competitive and reasonable. Their professionalism, quality of work, and customer service are noteworthy. We were referred to the company by a neighbor and they were equally happy with the work. Thank you Isaiah & Josue Macias and your team for a job well done! This review is a long time coming as it’s been several months but I have to say how amazing Ascent roofing has been for our home and family. We had a consultation with Josue who took the time to address our concerns and patiently answer the million questions I had. The installation crew was professional, friendly and worked fast. Saira helped navigate through all the paperwork and explained everything so I felt confident before signing my life away on such a large investment. On top of that, the price was very competitive, especially living in such an expensive city. If you’re looking for a good, reliable roofing company with family values, do not hesitate to give these guys a call and see for yourself!Posted on Brett PerkinsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Pure professionalism from start to finish. 6 out of 5.Posted on Thomas PrimoschTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently had Ascent complete a full reroof of my 2 story home. My home is about 3400 square feet with three separate roof sections and a solar system. From the first meeting they were great. After discovering a leak, I scheduled Josue to provide estimates on fixing the leaking portion or doing the entire roof. The day of the estimate I had a conflict arise and Josue easily rescheduled for the next day. He arrived on time and from the first conversation I found him very pleasant. His pricing was very competitive. All their references checked out and confirmed the competitive pricing and their satisfaction. Once I signed the contract, within hours I was contacted by Isaiah who was the job scheduler. I was impressed just how quickly he called me to schedule the job for about a week in the future. This was important as there were a series of storms reported about a two weeks out. As promised his full crew arrived at 7am on the start date and began the disassembly. Every day for about a week (except Sunday) a full crew of 5 was on my roof. They were all very polite ands courteous to my wife and kids. They worked everyday from 7-4ish. Everyday, before they left, they made sure to clean up the work area around the home. Isaiah provided me with nightly reports of the progress his crew was making. He explained what to expect the following day...and he was right every time. As part of the job they had to remove my solar panels. They were reinstalled in the same working order as before the job. Isaiah promised my roof would be water tight every night just in case the rain came early. The job was completed on time and 2 hours before a 4 day rain storm. There were no leaks! I have had poor experiences with prior contractors where only partial crews would show up. So I was impressed when everyday a full crew was present. I commend Ascent for having the full crew show up and finishing the job on time. Another point I want to mention is their support team is stellar. Ascent was extremely helpful pulling permits from the city of San Marcos. Their patience dealing with the city's bureaucracy was amazing. To sum up, they are friendly, honest, skilled and on time! I definitely highly recommend them.Posted on Matthew RitzmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Bought my first house and my inspector let me know that my roof was end of life. There were also over 20 solar panels on the roof making this not a super simple replacement. Isaiah was my project manager and was absolutely superb. Other Roofers told me the project would take 5 days, Isaiah and his team had the roof completed in 2 and done very well for a very competitive price. The lead on the second day gave me a walkthrough upon completion to make sure I was happy with the work. There was a slight hiccup reconnecting the panels (one panel was not generating power) but without question Isaiah had his solar team back out working until they solved the issue. I will be recommending Ascent to anyone I know looking for a roof.Posted on Steven LewisTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ascent Roofing has been professional, courteous and efficient from the very start. I am completely pleased and happy with the new roof. The team showed up on time and completed the job in about 2 days. They even came back out at a later time to fix a little issue that needed fixed. I would recommend Ascent Roofing to others who are looking for getting their roof replaced.Posted on andrea wellsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From the first call to the completion of the roofing, the level of professionalism was outstanding. I had questions along the way and Isaiah and team were incredibly responsive and kind. I was kept up to date on findings during the roof replacement. I highly recommend Ascent Roofing.Posted on Catherine PersonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our 60’s townhome’s roof was fifteen years out of warranty and had developed leaks in six areas. We sought multiple roof bids based on our HOA’s new set of architect plans, to ensure that bids included all the same components. We chose Ascent Roofing and are very happy with their work, the staff, the price. They went above and beyond and provided excellent communication from the first phone call with the support staff and estimator through final billing. Owner Carlos Alfaro personally supervised the construction project. This is a family owned business that takes pride in their work Thank you to all at Ascent!Posted on Jared McElhanyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Ascent did an excellent job replacing our roof. Great communication throughout the process. Highly recommend.
From Deck to Details: Our Step-By-Step TPO Installation Process
Assess & Prep the Deck
We start by inspecting the current roof and substrate on your flat and low-slope areas. Any wet insulation or damaged decking is replaced so the roofing membrane has a solid, dry base.
Insulation & Cover Board
Next, we add insulation (often tapered) to improve energy efficiency and drainage on the flat roof. A high-density cover board creates a smooth, durable surface for this single-ply system.
Layout & Attachment
Sheets of TPO roofing membrane are rolled out and aligned for clean, straight seams. Depending on the building and wind exposure, the installation process is either mechanically fastened or fully adhered.
Hot-Air Welded Seams
We heat-weld laps so the thermoplastic polyolefin membrane fuses into a watertight sheet—no glue at the seams. Crews perform test welds and probe seams to confirm a tight, reliable bond.
Edges, Pipes & Drains
Custom flashings lock down parapets, curbs, and penetrations so the roof systems stay dry under UV and weather. Drains, scuppers, and terminations are detailed for long-term performance.
Daily Close-Outs
Each day of our installation work ends with cleanup, photos, and a brief update on your roofing project. You’ll know what’s done, what’s next, and how the TPO installation is tracking.
All Permits, Handled with Caution
Installing TPO roofing systems in San Diego requires a building permit and plan review—not a “no-plan” permit. Local rules also call for a Class A roofing assembly, and California’s Energy Code generally requires CRRC-rated “cool roof” products on low-slope projects. We prep the submittals, provide product data with Cool Roof Rating Council labels, and keep inspections smooth.
- Permits & Plans: We file San Diego’s required reroof permit and plans; roof replacements don’t qualify for a no-plan permit.
- Class A Assemblies: Your TPO system is specified and documented to meet the City’s Class A requirement.
- Title 24 / CRRC: We use products listed with the Cool Roof directory and include reflectance/emittance documentation that inspectors expect.

Frequently Asked & Questions
What does TPO roof installation cost in San Diego, and what drives it?
Pricing depends on roof size, tear-off vs. overlay, insulation thickness, attachment method, penetrations, access, and disposal. We provide a transparent, line-item free estimate for your specific roofing project.
Can TPO go over an existing roof, or is a tear-off required?
Sometimes, if there’s only one existing layer, the deck is dry and sound, and fire/code requirements are met. We confirm with moisture checks and the permit office before work begins.
How long does a TPO roof realistically last here?
A roofing system made of TPO offers 15–30 years of service when properly installed and maintained. Thickness, exposure, and routine roof maintenance all influence durability and service life.
Will TPO stay reflective over time, or does efficiency fade fast?
Reflectivity naturally weathers, but CRRC-listed membranes report aged values, not just brand-new numbers. Light cleaning helps maintain the energy efficiency of TPO roofing in San Diego.
What happens if ponding water occurs on a low-slope roof?
Occasional puddles happen, but persistent ponding can stress seams and collect debris. We correct it with tapered insulation, improved drainage, and timely maintenance.
